Avoiding a Sore Back when Shoveling!!!

Shoveling the white stuff! It’s definitely that time of year again here in Southern Ontario, time to break out the shovels and snow blowers! These inevitable tasks can start out seeming easy enough, fun even, when the snow is light and fluffy. Once it turns into the heavy and more difficult to remove sort of snow though is when trouble for the body, especially the low back, neck and shoulders, can begin!

To help avoid injury while clearing your path, first set yourself up for success by investing in a decent ergonomic shovel/snow blower, now readily available at most hardware stores. Doing a few light stretches before heading outside can also be helpful for preventing nasty muscle spasms, stretching helps bring blood flow to the muscles and gets them warmed up and ready to work.

Trying to avoid taking on loads that are too heavy for yourself is key as well, it may take a bit more time, but your body will be thankful the next day. Also, taking breaks from time to time can be helpful in combating the repetitive nature of this seasonal chore.

Heading in for a cup of tea or hot chocolate and a snack can help to refuel and re-energize you, so you can go back out there all refreshed and ready to take on whatever drifts your way!

I was a poet first, but also became a fantasy and science fiction writer. Poetry is still instilled in my stories. My goal is to entertain with thought provoking stories.
