Nutrition Blog:   Food Sensitivities

With Dan Watt, Level 2 ACE PT, and Author of Learning The Garden Of The Body (Amazon.com)

If we are all really lucky, Dr. Arla Kasaj, ND will give you a better and more detailed blog on food sensitivities (and food allergies).  Food allergies can be deadly and are far beyond my scope of knowledge.

I was talking to a family member about nutrition and he told me he was following The Virgin Diet by J.J. Virgin.  He explained that J.J. Virgin lists Seven foods to take out of your diet:  gluten, soy, dairy, eggs, corn, peanuts, sugar & sweeteners.  My doctor told me years ago that it takes about 3 weeks to remove a food type from your bloodstream.  I don’t know how long J.J. Virgin recommends but let’s go with the 3 weeks.  After the 3 weeks you pick one of the foods and reintroduce it to your diet.  If you feel good without any negative symptoms like a bloated stomach, weight gain, or stuffed nasal passage you would know that food group is okay.  If you do have a negative reaction then you need to take that food group out of your diet.  Unfortunately, for me peanuts are not a good idea, and I’m already lactose intolerant.

Keep in mind that a food that affects one person negatively might not affect someone else.

Some people are lactose intolerant (bloated stomach, diarrhea, etc.) or lack the enzymes to break down legumes and peanuts (flatulence).  So there are pills that contain the lactase enzyme for people with lactose intolerance and enzyme alpha-galactosidase (α-GAL) for intolerance to legumes and peanuts.  There are pills and liquids for these but always check out possible side effects before you take anything (we are not here to recommend any medication or supplements).

You can try eliminating a food group for three or so weeks and then re-introduce it but if you want to take medications or supplements it would be wise to discuss it with a health professional such as, a naturopath, nutritionist, or other health certified professional.

This concludes our nutrition blogs and our blogs for this year.

Merry Christmas (and whatever Holiday you celebrate) and Happy New Year, we’ll meet you again in 2018!!!

I was a poet first, but became a fantasy fiction writer in high school after reading The Hobbit, The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe, and The Sword of Shannara. After completing my dual major in Anthropology and History at WLU and reading The Forever War, I Robot, and numerous Star Wars books, I also started writing science fiction.
