Similarities between Personal Training and Car Sales Rep

Personal Training and Car Sales Rep               September 24, 2016

Many moons ago I went away to Saint Martins with my buddies B.S. and J.C.  As I was the lightest I got to sit in the back of the car we rented.  Saint Martins is very hilly with speed bumps in the most interesting places; like the top of a hill.

J.C. couldn’t go on the next trip so it was just B.S. and me.  B.S. likes to drive so I sat shotgun.  He kept asking me if I remembered this and that place.  I told him I didn’t.  I reminded him that I sat in the backseat the last time, getting another concussion every time he drove over a speed bump.

Talking with a car sales rep named George the other day I realized how similar our jobs are.  When selling a car George has to consider the upper torso of a client.  You can move the seat back, and adjust the height to some degree, but a long torso can limit a person’s choice of vehicle.  Playwright Samuel Beckett used to drive Andre the Giant to school in his truck because Andre was too big for the school bus.

In the gym, a person’s upper torso determines what position an exercise machine seat and chest pad should be put at.

A car sales rep will discuss how far a seat should be pushed back so a purchaser doesn’t over extend their foot or hip reaching for the pedals.  This is exactly how a trainer should show their client how to set up an exercise bike.  Joints should never be over extended or locked out while driving or exercising.

Next Saturday (Oct. 1, 2016) will be a Surprise!

I was a poet first, but became a fantasy fiction writer in high school after reading The Hobbit, The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe, and The Sword of Shannara. After completing my dual major in Anthropology and History at WLU and reading The Forever War, I Robot, and numerous Star Wars books, I also started writing science fiction.
