Triceps Nov. 5, 2016
Tri means three. You have a long head, medial head, and short head to the triceps muscles.

Model: Gloria Antwi (certified personal trainer)
Yellow is the medial head, green the short head, and red the long head. As we’ll see below the position of the hands decides what head is worked the most.

Gloria has her eyes closed because the sun is shining directly at them. I’ll get better as a photographer.
Gloria is doing French Presses or Overhead Triceps Extensions. This is a good exercise to strengthen the core in a static position and body correction. It works mostly the long head of the triceps.

The side profile shows the aligment of the body. You need to keep your tummy slightly drawn in for every exercise to stabilize the spine and keep it in neutral alignment. If the tummy (lower ab and obliques) are not slightly engaged the spine will curve to much and that could cause pinching of the sac between the vertebrae.

If you look at Gloria’s hand position its similar to holding a hammer and works the long head of the triceps.

Krystal (Hamel) Gohl. My very first model! Thanks to Bill Labron and Lynne McRuer of Music Plus, Kitchener http://musicpluscorp.com/ for allowing us to use their facility years ago.
Krystal’s hand position will trigger all three heads of the triceps. One is not better than the other just different focus.
I don’t recommend skull crushers (lying on your back, often with an E-Z bar held in your hands like a bench press but lower to just above your skull or past it. The reason is, if you go heavier it always seems to effect the elbows in a Bad Pain way. You can try it just keep that in mind and stop if it does.
Dips, cables with rope, cables with bars or other handles can be used. You can do one arm at a time or both. The hand position will determine which heads of the muscle you are exercising.
Keep an Eye open for Next Saturday!!!
