Neck Stretch for Sternocleidomastoid aka SCM

Sternocleidomastoid aka SCM Stretch

The SCM is a long strap like muscle found on either side of the neck respectively.  Each has two heads; one beginning at the upper sternum, the other at the middle third of the clavicle (collar bone), and culminating at the mastoid process just below each ear.

When both sides are contracted SCM is responsible for flexing the neck forward and raising of the sternum, and therefore the ribs also, during deep inhalation.

When just one side is contracted it tilts the head to the same side, or rotates the head upward and to the opposite side.  Head aches and neck pain can stem from these major neck muscles, especially when extreme or whiplash type movements have occurred.

To stretch SCM, begin by either sitting upright and relaxed in a chair, or lie down on a yoga mat.  Slowly side bend the head to the right shoulder, then look slightly upward to stretch the left side, and vice versa to stretch the right side.

Hold each stretch for 30 seconds to a minute if possible.
